A merchant of Qingzhou, a man surnamed Jia, traded abroad and often did not return home for whole years. In his house was kept a white dog, and his wife enticed it to couple with her until it became a habit. One day the husband came home and lay with his wife. The dog suddenly rushed in, leapt on the bed, and bit the merchant to death. Later the neighbors came to hear of it and, indignant, reported it to the authorities. The magistrate put the woman in chains, but she would not confess, so she was imprisoned. He ordered the dog to be brought, and the woman led out. The dog, catching sight of the woman, rushed straight at her and tore her clothes in a mating posture. The woman was then at a loss for words. Two officers were sent to escort them to the provincial tribunal, one guarding the woman and one the dog. Those who wished to see them mate clubbed together money to bribe the officers, who would then make the pair couple. Wherever they stopped, a hundred spectators gathered, and the officers profited thereby. In the end both woman and dog were hewn to pieces in punishment. Alas! Great is heaven and earth, and truly there is nothing that is not to be found in them. Yet was this woman the only one with a human face who coupled with a beast?
The Historian of the Strange passed this judgment upon her: "Meetings at Pushang were mocked in ancient times; assignations in the mulberry grove brought men into contempt. But this woman, unable to bear the solitude of the widow's chamber, wildly dreamed of illicit joys. A yaksha lying in the bed was but the she-beast of the household; a nimble fellow entering through the hole became the lover under the coverlet. Before the terrace of cloud and rain she wantonly shook a tail appended to a fox's body; in the warm bower she repeatedly solicited the waist that drags the elephant. A sharp awl sheathed in a pouch, it flashes free when the thighs part; a lingering knot on the arrowhead takes root the moment it drinks blood. To think of coupling with a creature of another kind is a fantasy beyond all reckoning. The dog barking in lechery brought about a lecherous crime; in jealousy, cruelty and murder, the laws of Xiao and Cao are hard pressed to punish it. The woman, not a beast yet truly a beast, foul, filthy, and rank, is meat that even the wolf and tiger would not eat. Alas! When a human commits adultery and murder, the woman is condemned to flaying; but when a dog commits adultery and murder, the world of the living has no punishment for it. When a man behaves ill, he is punished by being made a dog; when a dog behaves ill, the courts of the underworld should be at a loss for a law against it. He should be cut limb from limb to pursue his soul—send him under guard to ask the King of Hell!"
