The wife of the Shi family of Wan Village was haunted by a fox and, detesting it, could not get rid of it. Behind the door stood a jar, and whenever the woman heard her father-in-law coming, the fox would flee and hide inside it. The woman had observed this well and, keeping the knowledge to herself, said nothing. One day the fox slipped in, and the woman at once stuffed the mouth of the jar with wadding, set it in a cauldron, and boiled up scalding water. As the jar grew hot, the fox cried out, "It is burning hot! Do not play this cruel trick!" The woman was silent. It cried more and more urgently, until at last all was still. Drawing the stopper and examining, she found only a heap of fur and a few drops of blood.
