An old gentleman who was a Grand Historian—I have forgotten his name—was lying in his study one day when suddenly a little cortege issued from a corner of the hall. The horses were as big as frogs and the men as small as fingers, with several score of tiny outriders. An official in a black gauze cap and embroidered robe, carried in a little sedan, passed in a bustle out of the door. The gentleman, astonished, thought his eyes must have deceived him in his drowsiness. But presently a little man came back into the room, carrying a felt bundle the size of a fist, and went straight to the foot of the bed. "My master," he said, "sends you a humble present, and begs you to accept it, Grand Historian." So saying, he stood facing him, but did not offer the thing. After a moment he smiled to himself. "This paltry trifle," he said, "I suppose is of no use to the Grand Historian; it were better to give it to me." The gentleman nodded, and the little man went off with it, well pleased. He was never seen again. It was a pity the Grand Historian was so mean-spirited that he never asked where the creature came from.
