狐聯

焦生，是章丘石红先生的叔弟。在园中读书，半夜有两个美人来，颜色双绝。一个可十七八，一个约十四五，抚几展笑。焦生知道是狐，正色拒绝。长者说："君髯如戟，怎么没有丈夫气？"焦生说："我生平不敢二色。"女笑说："迂腐呀！你还守着腐旧之局吗？下元鬼神，凡事都以黑为白，何况床笫间琐事？"焦生又呵斥她。女知道不可动，就说："君是名下士，妾有一联，请对下联，能对我自己走：戊戌同体，腹中止欠一点。"焦生凝思不成。女笑说："名士本来如此吗？我代对好了：己巳连踪，足下何不双挑。"一笑而去。

A certain Jiao, the younger cousin of Mr. Shi Hong of Zhangqiu, was studying in his garden one night when two beauties came, both of peerless loveliness—one of about seventeen or eighteen, the other fourteen or fifteen. They leaned on the table and smiled at him. Jiao knew they were foxes and sternly refused them. The elder said, "Your whiskers stand up like a brush; why have you no manly spirit?" "I have never in my life taken a second love," said Jiao. "You are a pedant," laughed the girl. "Do you still keep to the stale rule? The gods of the lower world turn black into white in all things—how much more such trifles as what happens between the sheets!" Jiao cried out at her again. Seeing he could not be moved, she said, "You are a scholar of note; I have a couplet here, and I will go of my own accord if you can match it: 'Wuxu, of one body, but for a single dot lacking in the belly.'" Jiao knitted his brow and could not find the match. The girl laughed. "Is that the way of a noted scholar?" she said. "Let me match it for you: 'Jisi, feet linked in a chain, why do you not raise both soles?'" And with a laugh she went away.
