造畜

魇昧之术，方式不一，有的投放美饵，骗人吃下，人便迷惘，相从而去，俗名叫"打絮巴"，江南叫"扯絮"。小孩无知，往往受害。又有把人变为牲畜的，名叫"造畜"。这种术江北还少，河以南就有。扬州旅店中，有一个人牵着五头驴，暂时拴在马槽下，说："我一会儿就回来。"并嘱咐："不要让它们喝水吃东西。"就走了。驴暴晒在烈日下，蹄踢嘴咬十分喧闹。主人牵到凉处。驴见水就跑过去，就放纵让它饮。一打滚尘土都化成妇人。奇怪，问她们的来由，她们舌头僵硬不能回答。就把她们藏到室中。不久驴主来了，把五只羊系在院中，惊问驴在哪里。主人拉着客坐下，就送上餐饭，并且说："客先吃饭，驴就到了。"主人出去，尽饮五羊，辗转化为童子。暗中报告郡里，派役捕获，就械杀了。

The arts of enchantment take many forms. Some cast a tempting bait and, deceiving a man to eat of it, throw him into a daze so that he follows them away; it is called in common speech "beating the wadding," and in the south "pulling the wadding." Children, being simple, often fall victims. There is also the art of changing human beings into beasts, called "making beasts." This art is rare north of the river, but common south of it. In an inn at Yangzhou, a man led in five donkeys and tethered them for the moment in the stable, saying, "I shall be back directly," and charging the host, "Do not let them eat or drink," before he went away. The donkeys stood in the burning sun, kicking and biting and braying noisily. The host led them into the shade. When the donkeys saw water they rushed to it, and he let them drink their fill. They rolled in the dust and all turned into women. Astonished, he asked how it came about, but their tongues were stiff and they could not answer. So he hid them in a room. Presently the donkey-owner came and, tying five sheep in the courtyard, asked in surprise where his donkeys were. The host made him sit down and brought him food and drink, saying, "Eat your meal, sir; the donkeys will be here directly." Then he went out, and gave all five sheep to drink, and they turned, writhing, into boys. He secretly reported it to the prefecture, and officers were sent who seized the man and put him to death in fetters.
